The most famous red wine made in Tuscany is Brunello di Montalcino. 100% Sangiovese aged five years after harvest. Founded in 1970 as the only cooperative winery in Brunello, Cantina di Montalcino counts over 90 small family growers with close to 160 hectares of vineyards throughout the DOCG. In what Antonio Galloni calls a "Rubik’s Cube vintage," some of the best producers made wines that are actually ready to drink, not needing the 10+ years in the cellar that some of the more recent vintages require.
"I like the dried rose, tar and earthy bark notes here, with some orange peel and bitter cocoa. Flavorful and rich yet elegant and approachable at the same time, with powdery tannins. Medium to full body. Roasted spice at the end." James Suckling, 93 Points
