A three generation farm in Monforte d'Alba, the Azienda Agricola Rocca Giovanni crafts one of the best expressions of Barbera from the "Pianromualdo" zone of Barbera d'Alba. Along with Italian heavy hitter Prunotto, the Giovanni Rocca could be the single best expression of the varietal for the price. So vibrant that it practically shimmers across the palate, this low production Barbera is tightly wound and very focused. This Italian red wraps its juicy red and black fruit aromas around a core of nervy acidity and firm minerality. If you're a fan of Chianti Classico Riserva's, this may be a good introduction to the world of Piedmont wines.
"Dark cherries, dried herbs and smoke on the nose. Medium-bodied with chalky tannins and lots of brightness coming from the sour cherries and high-toned acidity. Drink now." James Suckling, 90 Points
