The top four red wines of Chile (2020) according to James Suckling are as follows:
#1 Don Melchor Cabernet
#2 Clos Apalta
#3 Sena
#4 Emiliana GE
Amazing wines indeed, but #1-#3 are all currently sold on the open market for $125-$150 a bottle, when you can find them! That's why we are so excited at The Wine Buyer to showcase James Suckling's #4 wine of the year: Emiliana GE 2017, an elegant & organic Bordeaux styled blend from high elevation vineyards in the beautiful Colchagua Valley. Just starting to hit the drinking window, this ripe and generously oaked is extremely polished, with notes of black currant and blackberry with a well-calibrated structure, brought by the lengthy maceration and fine-grained tannins. Grows deeper and more expressive once opened for a little while. In fact, this blend is so impressive, the 2018 Vintage was voted the #1 wine of Chile by James Suckling in 2021. However, that vintage is not yet ready to drink, or won't be imported into the US this year. So, we "settle" for the 98 point ready-to-drink 2017 until 2023!
"This shows superb finesse and balance with wonderful, harmonious fruit and tannin tones that give the wine purity and focus. Dried spices, blackberries, walnuts and tile. Deep, contained structure with pure, fine tannins. The finish is incredible and goes on for minutes. A blend of 56% Syrah, 31% Carmenere, and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. From biodynamically grown grapes. One for the cellar. Better after 2022, but already fantastic." James Suckling, 98 Points
