Full-bodied, silky & elegant, the 2019 vintage of the Gigognan Chateauneuf du Pape is a must have for all French wine lovers! A relatively young estate for the Southern Rhone, Chateau Gigognan was established in 1996 by husband and wife team Anne and Jacques Callet. While the winery itself is going through a rebirth, the property and vineyards have been in existence since the 17th century. Their monumental 2015, 2016 & 2017 vintages were a tough act to follow, but 2019 is stepping up to outclass its younger siblings. The vintage combines elegance with power, creating exceptionally structured red wines, and the Chateau Gigognan shows this in spades. A dark brooding hue, with deep aromas of blackberry, and crushed blackcurrant lead to a dense, ripe palate filled with dark fruit and fine oak integration. While Clos de Papes and Beaucastel are fetching $100+, the Chateau Gigognan Chateauneuf du Pape is simply amazing for under $35 plus free shipping!

Wine Enthusiast: 95 Points

"Vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there's a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan's Clos du Roi that's consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvédre (20%) and Syrah (10%), it's packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, edged by a stony, salty minerality. Fine, smoothing tannins are welcoming young but it should continue to improve through 2035 at least." The Wine Enthusiast, 95 Points

Jeb Dunnuck: 93 Points

"Ripe black cherries, new leather, ground pepper, and loamy soil are just some of the nuances in the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Clos Du Roi, a medium-bodied, elegant, beautifully balanced 2019 that's going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 10-12 years. The blend is 70% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah." Jeb Dunnuck, 93 Points

James Suckling: 93 Points

"Tons of milk and bitter chocolate, as well as ripe plum and plenty of delicate, spicy notes make this a very classic Chateauneuf. Ample fine tannins support that considerable richness (typical for 2019). Long, creamy finish that’s dry enough. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." James Suckling, 93 Points

Wine Spectator: 93 Points

"A meaty wine, with converging flavors of earth, tar, violet and fruit, plus cranberry and cassis notes offset by charred mesquite and singed herbs. Gains lift from potpourri notes and mineral energy. A charmingly old-school style. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035." The Wine Spectator, 93 Points
