The most famous red wine made in Tuscany is Brunello di Montalcino. 100% Sangiovese aged five years after harvest, the 2017 campaign was not for the traditionalists, as the dry, hot conditions produced styles that were more akin to opulent Super Tuscans than Brunello. Founded in 1970 as the only cooperative winery in Brunello, Cantina di Montalcino counts over 90 small family growers with close to 160 hectares of vineyards throughout the DOCG. In a vintage like 2017, this diversity of vineyards is a huge positive, as they can cut production and blend top performing parcels better than their neighbors. The net result is why Cantina di Montalcino scores higher than $100+ wines like Banfi, Ciacci Pianrosso and Siro Pacenti.
"Dark and toasty nose of dried cherries, truffles, dried earth, cloves, anise, charred bark and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Savory and compact with complex mushroom and spice notes on the lengthy, firm finish. Drink after 2023." James Suckling, 93 Points
