Rayos Uva Rioja Riveire 2014 750ML
Sku: 67344

Native from Cognac, Olivier Rivière studied oenology in Montagne St-Emilion (Bordeaux region) and then worked at several estates before settling in Spain. Olivier firstly worked Elian Da Ros in Marmandais, then at Domaine Leroy where his main interest was to learn about their biodynamic methods. Finally, he went on to Domaine de Chassorney to see how beautiful non-interventionist wines were made.

However, his dream was to start his own estate in Fitou but the project was abandonned as Olivier didn't get enough money to invest in such a project. Well, he decided to cross the Pyrénées mountains and go to Spain. In 2004, Olivier took a job with an estate in Rioja Alavesa where he had to convert the vines into biodynamic principles. Following that, he decided to stay in Rioja and began looking for quality vineyards in order to produce his own wines. Olivier found a grower in the tiny town of Cárdenas and bought his grapes and vinified them in 2006: that was his very first vintage. A few years later, he found some more affordable vineyards in Arlanza appellation (in Burgos) and bought a couple of hectares well situated in terms of terroir and altitude.

Today, Olivier Rivière produce with his limited means wines that definitely taste far apart from the vast majority of Spanish wines available (high alcohol, over extracted, very oaky flavours). He has succeded in bringing wines that express their Spanish identity (notably with using the indigenous grape varieties) but with a freshness and complexity rarely reached in the area.

Tasting notes
A fresh wine with red and black fruit, mineral notes and some bitter touches. The wine has supple tannins, a crisp acidity and a long finish.

Rating
“Youthful purple. Ripe dark berries and pungent flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Energetic, spice-accented blackberry and cassis flavors are joined by a five-spice powder element that gains strength as the wine opens with air. The floral note repeats emphatically on the long, gently tannic finish, which leaves a juicy berry note behind. There's no oak here, just stainless steel.” Vinous, 90 Points
