It started in 2014, when The Wine Spectator dedicated two features to red wines from the Douro, asking whether or not the region could bring their wines to a "Grand Cru" level. Later that year, 3 of Spectator's Top 5 wines were from Portugal, all listed well under $100. Today, Portugal is becoming a leaders in elegant, full-bodied premium reds.

Such is the case for the beautiful Quinta de la Rosa Reserva 2009. An old vines field blend consisting principally of native varietals: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, which is aged for 18 months in new French oak barriques. Extravagant aromas of dark plum, raspberry and dark currant, with concentrated Asian spice notes that are complex and alluring. With huge scores and a low price tag, this is a must have for all full-bodied red wine lovers!

Rating
"Concentrated, uplifting and intense nose of mocha, dark cherry, herb, raspberry, blackberry and violet. Powerful, mouth-filling fruit which is well defined and juicy. It shows real finesse, underpinned by a sophisticated structure. A cooler Douro style." Decanter Magazine, 97 Points

"Shows elegance in the mid-palate, deliciously juicy fruit, a substantial backbone of its own and intense flavor...A lovely and ageworthy Reserva, increasingly sexy as time goes on and bursting with flavor. For all that, I was gratified to see it show some earthiness and complexity with air. It should be a winner all around. Drink 2013-2021." The Wine Advocate, 93 Points

Also rated 93 Points - Wine Enthusiast, Wine & Spirits

Wine maker notes
The Bergqvist Family have been in the wine industry since 1815, and Quinta de la Rosa has been a part of their estate for 110 years. In 1988, Sophia Bergqvist and her father Tim, decided to launch an estate produced premium Port brand, and several years later became one of the pioneers in top-quality table wine production from the Douro region. Quinta de la Rosa's red and white table wines have won many accolades, including their 2009 Reserva which has four 93+ ratings and a 91 from Wine Spectator.
