If you've been subscribing to The Wine Buyer's daily e-mail for the past year, we're sure you are amazed at all the value wines coming out of Spain!

Today's offer is another big winner, a classic Rioja Reserva from winemaker Alberto Orte and powerhouse Compania de Vinos del Atlantico (CVA for short). This is the third wine we've featured from CVA, as the group just knows how to source from the best vineyard sites throughout Spain. Loaded with aromas of cherry and lavender, the La Tercera is surprisingly juicy, with flavors of dark berry and chocolate. A wine that maintains perfect balance, this hidden gem from CVA showcases the best of Rioja.

Rating
"A sensational Rioja made from 90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Grenache, the 2010 Reserva was aged 30 months in French oak. A classic, traditional Rioja, it exhibits notes of lead pencil shavings, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black cherries, blackcurrants and subtle oak in the background. This dense ruby/plum/purple-colored 2010 is medium-bodied, elegant and pure with a lovely texture and lushness. Already revealing secondary nuances as well as considerable appeal, it should drink well for 4-5 years, possibly longer." Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 93 Points

Wine maker notes
La Tercera Reserva is a wonderful example of what Rioja wine is all about, blending the best terroirs from the three well known sub-zones: Rioja Alta, Alavesa and Baja. Each of these areas is unique and complementary, allowing Rioja to craft extremely consistent wines. In hot years the best grapes come from Rioja Alta, in cold years Rioja Baja is best suited due to its warmer microclimate. Rioja Alavesa is always in the middle not as hot not as cold, making it a good midpoint of balance. Aged for a total of 3 years, out of which 30 months are in barrel and 6 months in the bottle, this is unbelievable Rioja for under $20!
