The most famous wine of Italy's Valpolicella is Amarone. Distinctly rich, this red wine is like no other in the world.

High in alcohol, with intense flavors and aromatics, the beauty of Amarone is found in the painstaking effort that goes into producing each bottle. First, you need about 23 pounds of grapes for each bottle. (For comparison sake, the average non-Amarone wine produced in Valpolicella requires 2 pounds.) Then you need to dry the grapes on straw mats until they dehydrate into raisins, before you can even begin vinification. The raisins are then pressed and aged according to traditional methods, to extract that signature rich, smooth and full-bodied style.

Some of the best known producers like Quintarelli and Tommaso Bussola fetch over $500 a bottle. The Wine Buyer found one that's under $30 and rated 91 Points from the Wine Advocate!

Tasting notes
Dark, garnet-edged ruby; scents of wild cherry, dried rose petals, and cocoa powder; alcoholically warm in the mouth, well-balanced, with supple tannins

Wine maker notes
For three generations, the Tezza family have been dedicated winegrowers. Grandparents Giovanni and Virginia launched the family vineyard operation in 1960, and their children, Paolo, Giuseppe, and Renzo carried the family into winemaking. The estate is located in Valpantena, a valley that lies in between Lake Garda and the arc of the Italian Alps. Its breathtaking location gives Tezza a uniquely temperate climate, that suits the native Corvina and Rondinella to craft outstanding Amarone!
