Calling all Italian wine lovers, The Wine Buyer just scored a huge deal on the Giacomo Mori Castelrotto, the highest rated 2011 Chianti Riserva under $20!

85% Sangiovese with the addition of 15% Merlot, the Riserva Castelrotto is aged 18 months in new and second use Allier oak barrique and held another 10 months in bottle before release. This 28 month process mirrors the time requirements for Brunello di Montalcino, with a just little less time in oak and more time in the bottle. Mori chooses a bit less oak to express what he calls the "very essence of Sangiovese, both elegant and concentrated at the same time." That's exactly what you get with the Castelrotto, not to mention small production with 585 total cases produced.

Tasting notes
Ruby red, austere elegance and strong personality, scent of licorice and leather.

Rating
"The 2012 Chianti Riserva Castelrotto is quite pretty and delicate in this vintage. Sweet red cherries, crushed flowers, mint and gentle spices all take shape. Reflecting the more modest quality of the year compared with 2013, the 2012 Riserva is feminine in style, with a lifted, floral expression of fruit and mid-weight structure. It, too, is incredibly delicious. Bright rose petal and raspberry notes add the final shades of nuance." Antonio Galloni, 92 Points

Wine maker notes
The "Azienda Agricola Mori" is an historical name of the Chianti Region, one of the first estates that started marketing wine in Europe and in the United States. The Mori family has owned this estate since the 18th century and have been growing grapes and selling wine to the local cooperative since the 1830s. However, it was not until the mid 1990s that Giacomo Mori renovated the vineyards and cellar and began estate bottling. No ambition here to produce great quantities, the vineyard will never exceed 10 hectares, but rather a powerful drive to create the finest possible expression of Chianti.
