Two weeks ago, The Wine Advocate released new reviews on over 700 Chilean wines. Editor Luis Gutierrez was gushing about the "New Chile," and we think he's a little late to the party. The Wine Buyer's been sourcing wines from these new school wineries for the past three years!

The Mayu Pedro Ximenez 2013 is quite a find. A great alternative to a zippy Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand or France, don't get fooled by the fact this wine is made from Pedro Ximenez. This isn't the port style wine that is generally poured over vanilla ice cream, although that sounds quite good during the summer as well. It's the top rated white wine listed in the issue for under $15 and we echo the worlds of Mr. Gutierrez by saying the Mayu "offers mind-boggling quality and character at unbelievable prices."

Rating
"The 2013 Pedro Ximenez from very old vineyards in parral style on decomposed granite, quartz-rich soils, and might well be the highest vineyard in Chile. The place has a special brightness - I'm talking about the quality of the light from the high altitude - that brings the aromas out, this is much more expressive than your average Pedro Ximenez, with aromas of white flowers, fennel and some spiciness, very dry, with high acidity thanks to the altitude as well as tension and minerality. If you like the fresh, austere style, this is a real steal. A good alternative to Sauvignon for seafood. Drink now-2016." The Wine Advocate, 91 Points

Wine maker notes
The Olivier family started Vina Mayu in 2005 as an independent family winery in the desert region of Elqui. The Elqui Valley is known for least amount of precipitation in the world, bordering the Atacama Desert, the best place in the world for stargazing because there is so little water vapor in the atmosphere. They honor the place and its history with the name of the winery, “Mayu” the Incan word for the Milky Way’s river of stars. The driving force for starting this winery was a passion for the challenge of transforming a desert with enormous potential into a vineyard producing premium wines.
