Looking for an alternative to the typical full-bodied Cabernet? The Wine Buyer's fallen hard for the San Pedro 1865 Carmenere 2011, one of the top rated red wines in the vintage under $20.

Listed as one of the "11 Distinctive Reds from Chile" in the Wine Spectator, the San Pedro 1865 was the only Carmenere listed with a score over 90. Originally from France, winemakers in Bordeaux used to blend Carmenere to add deep color and flavors into their wines. In the mid 19th century, Carmenere was almost extinct from France and was transplanted to Chile where the varietal now thrives. Known for its ripe, dense, full-bodied flavors, this single vineyard version is outstanding for the price!

Tasting notes
Intense and fruity with notes of blackberry, fresh plum and black cherry with hint of black pepper vanilla and blond tobacco. Good volume, with ripe tannins that gives softness and roundness to the wine.

Wine maker notes
Vina San Pedro was originally founded in 1865, when brothers Bonifacio and Jose Gregorio Correa Albano acquired pieces of land formerly owned by their ancestors. They began to produce their first wines with local grape varieties, and these were later replaced by noble vines from Southern France and Germany. They are credited with giving birth to viticulture in Chile's Curico Valley. Almost 150 years later, Vina San Pedro is still a leader in Chilean wine, and their single vineyards 1865 series are some of the highest rated for the price.
