Jeff Carrel is the Languedoc's self-proclaimed "eclectic winemaker," who owns neither a winery nor any vineyards, but crafts some of the best, and most interesting wines in Southern France.

His Les Darons 2014 cuvee (Grenache, Syrah, Carignan) is sourced from estate vineyards at Chateau Arcades, and just scored a whopping 91-94 points from The Wine Advocate. He calls the wine "Les Darons," a slang term for father or papa, and as the vineyards at Arcades are 40+ years old, the name seems fitting for this patriarchal wine. Eclectic or not, Carrel makes fabulous wine, and the 2014 Darons is a smooth, robust, pure expression of the Languedoc. This is a definite case buy!

Rating
"A wine that blew me away was the 2014 Languedoc Les Darons by Jeff Carrel. Still in barrel, it offers thrilling notes of black and blue fruits, violets, and peppery spice to go with a medium to full-bodied, elegant, seamless profile on the palate. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan and 10% Syrah that was fermented and aged all in concrete tank, it has striking purity, integrated acidity and a great finish. It should drink nicely on release and have 7-8 years of overall longevity." The Wine Advocate, 91-94 Points

Wine maker notes
Jeff Carrel is a freelance winemaker. He doesn't own vineyards or a winery. His overhead is essentially nil. He buys grapes from vineyards he respects, where careful attention has been paid to the soil and the fruit, and he borrows winery space and equipment to produce his wines. It's an unusual model, but it works. The wines are impressive and generously priced...Like $10.99 for 91-94 points!
