A full-bodied blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, and Carignan sourced from 50+ year old vines in the newly created appellation of Maury Sec, this is a step above Cotes du Roussillon Villages. Located in the Agly Valley, this region of the Roussillon is rugged, sheltered, and warm with distinctive black schist soils. Reds from Maury Sec are darker and more brooding than wines from the rest of the Roussillon, perhaps why Robert Parker & The Wine Advocate tend to show them so much love.

Rating
"Inky color to go with lots of upfront black raspberry, cassis, licorice, wilder herbs and violet-like aromas and flavors. Coming all from the black schist soils of the newly created Maury Sec AOC, this full-bodied, sexy, supple and yet still fresh and lively 2014 will drink nicely on release and have 4-5 years or evolution." The Wine Advocate 90-93 Points

Wine maker notes
Since the end of the 19th century, the Lafage family has been cultivating vines throughout France. At 40 years of age and passionate about his roots, Jean-Marc Lafage has taken over his family legacy. His Maury based estate, Saint Roch pulls from vines planted on the black schist soils but also from the more cooler, granite-dominated terroirs around the villages of Lesquerde and Saint Paul de Fenouillet. As Jeb Dunnuck from the Wine Advocate writes: "The wines are jaw-dropping good. In addition, they're ridiculously under-priced given their quality."
