The Bodegas Casa Castillo Las Gravas is a blockbuster red, and one of the top wines in the region. Robert Parker has called Las Gravas one of his "favorite treasure troves for value-priced Spanish wines," and it's no surprise that Eric Solomon is involved in this project. Crafted from a single vineyard that bears the same name, the wine is a blend of hand harvested Monastrell, Garnacha, and Syrah. Full-bodied and opulent, now is the time to jump on the Las Gravas bandwagon...if you haven't already done so!

Rating
"2012 could be the finest vintage to date...It starts off with some notes of smoke, toffee, fresh fruit and orange peel in harmony with well-integrated oak and a stony profile that develops more and more notes of esparto grass with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with some polished, very fine tannins and a good mid-palate that is very balanced and fresh...The price is a dream come true. Super!" The Wine Advocate, 94 Points

Wine maker notes
In 1941, Mr. Jose Sanchez-Cerezo acquired the "Propiedad Viticola Casa Castillo" for the primary development of rosemary. On the property was a winery built in 1870 by the French, when phylloxera forced them out of their vineyards in France. Jumilla is one of the few places in Spain that successfully resisted the infestation of phylloxera, making it an ideal place for this new winery. In 1985, the second generation of the family revived the property with the reconstruction of the vineyard and in 1991 the cellar was reformed to preserve its original structure. Their first wine was launched into the market in 1993 and today Jose M Vicente manages Casa Castillo. The name Las Gravas translates to "the gravels" referring to the soil type of the vineyard.
