A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this full-bodied red shows complex, and intense ripe fruit aromas. The Salviano estate occupies 4,940 acres located on the banks of the Tiber River in the heart of the Orvieto, about an hour drive north of Rome. Salviano is part of the Titignano estate, a much larger property under the same ownership, located across the lake in the medieval village of the same name.

If this name sounds at all familiar, the Salviano property is owned by Incisa della Rocchetta family, owners of legendary Sassicaia. Extensive renovations, including a rebuilt wine cellar and newly planted vineyards of indigenous and international varieties have contributed to the success of Tenuta di Salviano.

Rating
"Rich, bright color and fresh fruit aroma. Medium to full bodied and silky tannins. Plum, blackberry and spice with hints of licorice." The Wine Buyer, 90 Points

Wine maker notes
The Turlo vineyards are located on the hills of Lake Corbara’s northern bank at 150 to 380 meters in elevation. The generally southern exposure varies by vineyard site. The soil is rich in red clay, tufa (a limestone common to central Italy) and small pebbles. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness to ensure a rich, concentrated finished wine. Each grape variety is fermented separately in small, temperature-controlled steel tanks. A maceration period with frequent pumping over is followed by malolactic fermentation. A small amount of the wine is aged in French oak barriques prior to blending and bottling for added complexity.

Review:
Great deal on a super Tuscan and worth much more than $10. Works well out of the bottle but best decanted for an hour or more. Big boy red and feels good in the mouth with a strong finish.
