Rioja is the crown jewel of Spanish reds, and one of the most popular labels is Marques de Caceres. Instantly recognizable, their Rioja Reserva is only produced in the vintages which Marques de Caceres considers "exceptional" or "very good." 2009 was a fantastic vintage with hot, dry growing conditions that produced solid wines with ripe fruit. This Rioja Reserva was then aged 20 months in French oak and then for 24 months in bottle prior to release.

This "aging of the bottles" at the winery, is one of the main reason we love Rioja Reserva. The wines are actually ready to drink upon release! Powerful aromas of blackberries and red currant with herb, licorice and toasty notes, this is a classy and elegant red. Drinking beautifully now, you could still cellar away a few bottles as this wine should fully mature in a few years.

Rating
"This generous red delivers ripe plum and currant fruit, with notes of toast, licorice and loam. Firm tannins impart structure, while juicy acidity keeps this lively. Drink now through 2018." Wine Spectator, 90 Points

Wine maker notes
Founded in 1970, Marques de Caceres has rapidly become the leader in the renaissance of Rioja. The bodega was established by Henri Forner, whose family fled Spain during the Spanish Civil War and settled in France. In the early 1960ís Henri Forner and his brother Elysee bought and restored two antiquated Chateau's: Camensac and Larose-Trintaudon. When Henri decided to establish a winery in his native Spain, Forner selected what he considered the finest viticultural area: Cenicero in Rioja Alta. Marques de Caceres was also one of the first Spanish Riojas to be represented in the United States.
