It's hard to believe that it has been almost eight months since we featured the Altos de Luzon 2006 for April's Wine of the Month. A full-bodied beauty from Jumilla, Spain that was awarded three 90+ point scores from some of the top names in the wine world. Well deserved accolades for Bodegas Luzon, an estate located in the mountains 220 miles southwest of Madrid.
Sourced from two unique vineyards, this full-bodied blend of Monastrell, Cabernet and Tempranillo has tremendous saturation of color, round rich flavors of ripe plums, blackberries and cassis with balanced notes of warm spices. The integrated tannins and long, well developed finish are the culmination of gifted winemaking and 12 months of careful aging in French and American barrels.

"A leader in user-friendly Monastrell from Jumilla is Luzón. Altos is the winery’s high-expression baby, and if you like a bruiser with char, toast, coffee and other nocturnal characteristics, then look no further. Dynamite in terms of ripeness, with monster black-fruit, chocolate and coffee flavors." The Wine Enthusiast, 91 Points ($19 Release Price)
"Glass-staining ruby. Cherry-cola and blackberry on the nose, with sexy vanillin oak and baking spice accents. Pliant dark berry flavors stain the palate, with firming dusty tannins absorbed by the fruit on the broad, sweet, long finish." Stephen Tanzer, 91 Points
"This purple-colored wine offers a complex aromatic array of pain grille, scorched earth, blueberry, black cherry, and violets. This leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of savory fruit, spicy flavors, outstanding depth and structure, and a lengthy finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2018."
